Championing Sustainability: Employee and Community Engagement

Challenge

How to engage over 5,000 employees across more than 45 countries? That was the challenge for an international packaging company when it launched its new sustainability strategy.

Response

We worked with their team, to create a network of ‘Champions’ — selected employees in each of the major sites around the world, tasked with organising campaigns to engage their colleagues.

We work with the champions to identify global themes, like food waste, support them in interpreting the theme for their region, and develop the tools and materials to run successful events.

We’ve seen some really creative ideas, from a video competition in Brazil to a food waste workshop in the US.

At the end of the first year, we gathered feedback from the Champions and identified opportunities to build on the success of the programme. This included expanding its scope to go beyond engaging employees and reach the wider communities around the client’s operations. The first step is to establish a ‘global engagement day’ — one day a year when all sites encourage employees to volunteer in their local community.
